Culture

The province of Castellón is a region with great potential as far as its historical and artistic heritage, its gastronomy, fiestas and traditions are concerned; a result of its long history dating back over a thousand years and of the creative spirit of its inhabitants.

The visitor may take an agreeable journey back in time through its rich and extensive artistic and historical heritage: from the cave paintings of the Valltorta ravine (Tírig-Albocàsser) and Morella la Vella, classified as World Heritage Sites; the archaeological ruins of the Iberian settlement of Puig, one of the most important Iberian archaeological sites in the Valencian Region; Roman ruins such as the arch standing majestically in Cabanes dating back to the year 210 BC; the medieval castles and forts such as those in Morella and Culla; numerous religious and civic structures embracing every architectural style, in Jérica, Morella, Segorbe, Sant Mateu, and across the length and breadth of the province.

Neither is the region short on museums with most of Castellon’s history on display in the more than 60

museums, galleries and historical archives of the province. Notable examples are the Museum of Fine Arts in Castellón de la Plana, the museums of Morella, the Natural History Museum in Onda, the Ceramics Museum in l’Alcora, the Cathedral Museum of Segorbe, the Museum of Modern Art in Vilafamés, the Orange Museum in Borriana, the Museum of the Sea in Peñiscola and the Museum of Valltorta.

Yet another element adding to Castellón culture, as well as its cuisine and fiestas, are its arts and crafts. Of particular importance is the ceramics industry which has survived into modern times thanks to the wise combination of tradition, art and industry. Its main exponents are the towns of Onda and l’Alcora and the Muy Noble Ceramics of Count Aranda. Also, the district of Alto Palancia jealously guards its ancient traditional craft of walking stick making, in the same way textile crafts (fabrics, rugs, blankets) continue to this day in El Ports, especially in Morella, as does hemp in Castellón, the Vall d’Uixó and Forcall. Famed woodwork workshops can be found in Borriol, Càlig, Castellón and Cervera.
